What are Rutland County Public Records?

Rutland County Crime Statistics

The Vermont Crime Information Center (VCIC) of the Department of Public Safety collects crime data from all the law enforcement agencies that operate in the state of Vermont. In 2018, Rutland County seat, Rutland city, the most populous city in Rutland County, reported a total of 445 index crimes to VCIC with larceny-theft making up the crime with the highest count for that year. Other crimes reported were three rapes, five robberies, 52 aggravated assaults, 56 burglaries, 15 motor vehicle thefts, two arsons, with no reported case of murder. The total count of index crimes in 2018 was a 34.8% decline in crime rate when compared to 2014 that recorded a total of 682 crimes. This 5-year trend revealed that in 2018, rape (40%), robbery (61.5%), burglary (49.5%), and larceny-theft (38.1%) rates declined in 2018. In contrast, aggravated assault (36.8%) and motor vehicle theft (66.7%) rates increased in the same year. Two cases of arson were reported in both 2018 and 2014, while there was no murder reported in both years.

Are Rutland County Criminal Records Public?

Rutland County criminal records are typically public records. They are official documents that hold information about the various crimes that occurred in Rutland County. The Rutland County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for compiling Rutland County criminal records and the VCIC makes them available upon request by interested and eligible persons. The VCIC provides access to criminal records through criminal history checks and criminal conviction reports. Criminal history checks are available only to persons named on criminal records. Police reports and photo CD cost $20 each, while it costs $45 each for video and audio recordings. Requesters can pay with credit cards when using the online service. For mail requests, checks with the applicable fees can be made out to the Vermont Department of Public Safety. Although the general public has access to police reports there are still certain exceptions.

The Vermont Crime Information Center (VCIC) and law enforcement agencies are responsible for disseminating information about registered sex offenders residing in the state of Vermont, including those of Rutland County.
